How do I make video clips from Library films for my assignments?

This is only for academic purposes, things like homework or graded assignments.

Answer

If you need make clips from library-held media to share in class or for graded assignments, here are some case-by-case scenarios:

  • for clips from physical media (DVD/Blu-Ray): use Handbrake (which is installed on all the Lab computers) to extract short clips. Read the IT Help Desk article on using Handbrake for instructions.
  • for streaming video from Kanopy or Swank films available via the library's collections: there is no way to extract a clip BUT
    • To show clips in class: you can note the time stamp and queue up the entire film and fast forward to that time point
    • For homework/assignment submissions: note the time stamp and submit that time with the direct link to the film
  • for news clips from NBC Evening News (1968-present) and CNN (October 1995-present), you can find clips in the Vanderbilt TV News Archive. Some of those segments are quite long so you should note the specific time stamp if you want to refer to a particular segment.
  • for streaming video from Films on Demand, many of the documentaries have short segments already defined but users can also make an account to create custom segments. Then you can share a link to that specific segment easily.
